The Naked Apes are the warped brain child of Mikey McCleary, a New Zealander, now living in London, England. The songwriting began in 1999 with Mikey and Davo (an old school friend from New Zealand, who shared the same birthday!) They would travel the world together, party and and write songs. On one of their infamous writing trips, hanging out on a beach in Mexico, Mikey and Davo randomly thought of a name for a band - The Naked Apes. Later that evening they arrived at their very cheap hotel and found only 2 books on the shelf in the lounge. These were The Naked Ape (by Desmond Morris) and The Bible ! This was clearly a divine sign, and, as there was already a band called The Bible, they decided on The Naked Apes.
TV, TOURS & RELEASES:
Since the birth of The Naked Apes, the band have been recording their own demos and producing independent videos, which have appeared on MTV, Scuzz and Chart Show TV. The Naked Apes were discovered by Hadyn Wood, from UK indie label Airplay Records, in June 2002, and have since toured the UK extensively, supporting the likes of Wheatus, REEF, Athlete, Fun Loving Criminals, [spunge] and Steriogram; and appeared at a variety of Extreme Sports Events, Festivals and College shows. Their music has been featured in a variety of Films, TV Shows and DVD's, including 7 Episodes of 'PUNK'D' on MTV, 'The World Wakeboard Championships', FOX TV's 'Rebel Billionaire', UKTV's 'Secret Life of the Gym' and indie films in Japan and America. In August 2003 and August 2004, the band released 2 limited run, independent singles to their growing fan base and scored 2 consecutive Top 20 indie chart hits in under 12 months. Their debut album "Something In My Genes" was recorded and produced by the band at Brit Row studios, in London, mixed by Dan Swift (Snow Patrol) and is now due for release throughout the world courtesy of licensees, including Radikal/4 West Records (US and Canada - RELEASE DATE MAY 1st 2007), TKO (Japan) and Sheer Music (South Africa).

Hey! Hope you are doing good. I wanted to let you know about a show i'm doing in London on Sunday, June 1st. I'm touring with Tommy Allsup. He played guitar with Buddy Holly, and is the guy playing on songs like "Heartbeat", "It's So Easy", etc, etc.....he is 76 and still going strong. He is a character. Anyway, i would love to see you at the show. I think as a fellow musician that you will really appreciate seeing Tommy play, and listening to his stories! He is THE guy that flipped the coin with Ritchie Valens. If you want to see Tommy in action....check out my blog. There is a video from last week in Nashville from the studio.
